Is the life we are calling other people to live, the life we are living as shepherds of God’s people? As preachers of the good news, we invite people to step into the joy and peace of the Lord. We invite them to life with God. If we are not careful, we can miss it ourselves.
Shepherding is a high calling and a privilege, and there are many benefits for the servants of God. Yet shepherding is often hurried, and filled with crises and disappointments. It is messy being involved in the lives of others in a sin fallen world. We have a ringside seat to witness some of the greatest joys and victories of life, yet also to witness some of the most heartbreaking difficulties and defeats of life.
What is the key to finding joy in shepherding? Joy cannot be found in personal accolades, or successful ministry metrics. Joy can only be found in a joyous relationship with God, that is nurtured in worship through prayer and the Word of God.
Fight for your time with God! You have nothing more pressing to do. There is no earthly obligation that supersedes the significance of your walk with God.
James 4:8 Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, sinners, and purify your hearts, double-minded people!
Matthew 11:28-29 Come to Me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. All of you, take up My yoke and learn from Me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for yourselves.
1 Peter 1:8-9 Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with inexpressible and glorious joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
God is our joy, and He is the greatest treasure we could ever know!
