1 Timothy 6:11 But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. 12 Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses.
The words in these verses are preceded by a discussion on the importance of not getting caught up in loving the material things of this world, and wandering away from the faith. Paul instructed Timothy to flee these things, run away from them, and have nothing to do with them.
Instead, the man of God is to pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, and gentleness. So we run from something that is harmful for us, and run toward those things that are helpful to us. As the Scripture makes clear however, it won’t be easy. There will be a fight and we are to fight the good fight of the faith.
The word “fight”, is the Greek word agonizomai which literally means to engage in conflict, to contend for a prize or to struggle. The word was used to refer to athletic games or engaging in military conflict. The fight is not easy, but it is worth it. Stand strong, fight the good fight, and honor God with all that you do.
